Academic Counseling

Hi! We are your counselors at Elmwood Park High School! Helping students make smart choices throughout high school is just one of our many responsibilities. Making good choices and understanding how they connect to future aspirations are two goals we have for our students as we help prepare them for a successful life after graduation.
We have designed this webpage to provide valuable resources that will help students with college and career planning and the financial aid process. There are also links with information about scholarships and standardized testing.
Although this website is a great tool for you, we must caution you about two things!
1. Counselors have information and resources that can be tailored to meet your unique needs. Never assume that the internet can replace talking to your counselor in person. We can help answer your important questions and guide you into further discussion as we get to know you. This process may help you as you make critical decisions about your future. Don’t be a stranger!
2. Although we have researched the links provided throughout this website, we cannot guarantee that all the links are accessible or working or that secondary pages are reliable or reputable. The more you “click” outside our webpage, the less we can guarantee how reliable the site may be. As is true with all internet activity, use caution and keep your eyes open for scams, individuals, and organizations that could use the Internet to gain access to you and to personal and financial information about you.
Parental involvement is strongly advised!

College Application
College Requirements
Most four-year schools set basic high school course requirements for admittance. When formulating your high school schedule, keep these in mind. Make sure you plan ahead with the college planning timeline.
- Four years of English
- Three years of Mathematics
- Three years of Science
- Three years of Social Science
- Two Years of Foreign Language
College Application Procedures
Apply early! The Guidance Office asks that you allow two weeks to process and mail your college applications - so check individual college/university application deadlines and plan your timing with those dates in mind.
- Many applications are available from your counselor but we encourage students to apply on-line through the college web-site.
- Students should bring their completed and signed application, letters of recommendation, and transcript request forms to the guidance counselor.
- Make sure you have a check or money order payable to the college for the application fee.
- The registrar will attach a transcript, school profile, and mail the application.
- Typically, the earlier you apply, the quicker the response time of the college.
- If applying to a selective college/university, be sure to have several second choice schools in mind. Be aware of any special deadlines these schools might have.
- If asking for a letter of recommendation from a teacher, be sure to give a least one week lead time. Also provide the recommender with an up-to-date resume, and be sure to thank them.
- Questions? Stop by the Guidance Office to ask your counselor!]
Transcript Release Forms - Must be completed and returned to the counseling office with ALL COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

College Decisions
College Decision Making Tips
Consider these things:
- How big is it?
- How many students attend the school?
- What is the average class size?
- How far would I have to walk between classes or to get to my dorm?
- Where is it located?
- Is it too far away from home or not far enough?
- What is the surrounding community like and would I be comfortable living there?
- Does the college offer the things that you are interested in?
- Does it have the major you are considering?
- What kinds of clubs/organizations or sports does it have?
- What are the facilities like?
- Will I need to buy a computer or are their several computer labs?
- How about internet access?
- Does it have a fitness center, theater, radio station etc.?
- Could I live comfortably?
- How are the food services?
- How big are the dorm rooms and what do they look like?
Talk to people you know:
- Talk to your school counselor
- Ask your parents, teachers, coaches, etc. Find out what their college experiences were like and why they chose the college they attended
Carefully review your Financial Aid Awards:
- Compare how much you will be receiving as grants/scholarships, how much you will be taking in loans, and how much money you will need out-of-pocket
Visit the campus again:
- Call the admissions office and set up a tour
Make your decision:
- Notify the campus immediately once you have made your decision (most schools have a May 1st deadline)
Notify the campuses you will NOT be attending so they can offer admittance to students on their wait list
College Search
College Search Sites - These sites are provided as links so you can do your own search for Colleges and additional training and education. Included is a little general info as to what to expect, but students need to be committed to spend some time to learn to use these sites, and access the information. Be sure to ask your Counselor for help, or suggestions!
- Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) is an arm of the State of Illinois, designed to provide help and information to Illinois students and their families. They have 2 sites that are useful to students and parents. One is called the College Zone, which is a search and information site, and the second is called ISAC Online, which provides links to lots of other places to get specific information on student and parent issues, especially focusing on Financial Aid.
- CollegeView - One of the most versatile search sites for college information and other links. Managed by Hobson's. Contains College Search and Scholarship Search.
- Making It Count - This is a private, but not for profit organization which seeks and receives Corporate sponsorship. That means that you will see ads for various companies, but the "agenda" for those writing the page is to provide unbiased info.
- The College Board - The producers of the SAT Test, AP Tests and a lot of info related to colleges and the college search process, not just college searches.
- Peterson's Guide - Peterson's has published a directory of Colleges for many years, this is the net version. This site also has some features to help students plan for College, and prepare for Tests.
- CollegeXpress - Owned and maintained by the Private Colleges and Universities Magazine. It also lists other resources (especially publication) that provide information, especially for Private colleges.
- At The U - A private company called "Nelnet" publishes this site. They provide some information and a lot of services (including book, supplies and College monogrammed stuff) through their "Campus Store" through which you are free to purchase supplies. The info is free, but all other stuff you must pay for.
- Fastweb - private Company that also supports the Making High School Count and Making your College Search Count programs. Fastweb is best known for their Scholarship search, but has college searches as well.
- Schools In The USA.com - Private site owned and maintained by a company referred to as the EI Group. This site is more career-focused, and provides ways of connecting career choices to College majors.
- College and University Link List - This is simply a listing of colleges (about 3,000 of them) and a link to the web sites of those colleges. If you know what college you are looking for, this will give you a short cut to the web site.
Technical and Vocational Schools - try this Technical Schools site for schools that specialize in the Technical areas of Information, and Industrial Service and Medical technologies. This also includes Graphic Arts, Automotive, and Manufacturing Technology. Talk to your counselor about other options in the area of Technology and Vocational training that are different than a traditional 4-year or 2-year college.
Financial Aid
Financial Aid
In the world of financial aid there are many different forms of assistance available to students and each serves a slightly different purpose than the other. Many students assume that words like scholarship, grant, and student loan are interchangeable. For each variety of assistance there are different tax stipulations, service requirements, and repayment expectations attached. Any student on the hunt for financial aid should know what they are looking for, and how it will help them achieve their goals.
Scholarships
What are Scholarships?
Scholarships are different than financial aid as they are often based on some achievement or accomplishment rather than need. Most scholarships are financial awards given to eligible students with no strings attached. Typically, if you win a standard scholarship, unless it is renewable, your interaction with the donor ends the day you receive your check. According to the IRS, if you are not pursuing a degree, the entire scholarship is taxable. For those students using the scholarship for college, any portion used for tuition, fees, books, and supplies is not taxable. Any funds remaining after your expenses are paid for, however, are subject to tax. There is not typically a service requirement or other stipulation attached to the scholarship upon receipt of the award, however, you should check to be certain. Scholarships are offered in many varieties-sweepstakes, essays, competitions-for traditional and non-traditional students alike. Occasionally scholarships require that you do a specified amount of community service after receiving the award.

- FastWeb -you can set up an "account" with them for no charge. Then, you can fill out a huge survey/questionnaire and receive from them a list of scholarships that you might qualify to apply for. If you don't like the list you got, you can go back and fill out the questionnaire again choosing some different answers. They will give you new results. They save the data and periodically re-process their database, so as they find out about new scholarships, they let you know by email. No guarantees, but we know they are reputable, and it doesn't hurt at all to see what they can tell you. And, IT'S FREE.
- Lunch Money.com - this is a relatively new site, specializing in helping students learn about the admissions process and helping students find and apply for scholarships. Try the site and let your Counselor know what you think about it. It looks like there are some good possibilities here.

- The College Board - the same organization that provides the SAT and PSAT Tests. They provide many sources for student and parent info

Testing
ACT
The ACT (or PSAE) must be taken to graduate!! All juniors will take the PSAE in the spring of their junior year.
Click here for the ACT site with Test Dates and for online registration. See your counselor for more information and for paper registration forms.
Dates for 2008-2009 testing will be posted soon!
There are also a variety of online test prep services that may help you improve your score, including NUMBER2.COM and Peterson's Guide info site. It is never too early to start studying!
SAT
The SAT is not required to graduate and is not required by many colleges for acceptance. However, be sure to check with schools of interest when deciding if taking the SAT is beneficial for you.
For more information about which tests are offered, dates, fees and the registration process, go to the College Board Website. Registration can be done online, or with paper registration forms available in the counseling office.
Test Preparation: At Elmwood Park High School, we DO NOT offer an SAT Prep class, but there are a variety of test prep services online, including: NUMBER2.COM, and Peterson's Guide.
PSAT: The PSAT is the "Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test" (Pre-SAT) and is also referred to as the NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). The test is designed to be taken by Juniors in the Fall of their Junior year. In addition to being a good practice test for the ACT and the SAT, the PSAT is used to qualify students as National Merit semifinalists and finalists, which may make those students eligible to receive merit-based scholarships from colleges or other private scholarship sources.
Test Date: TBA
Registration: All interested Juniors should see Mrs. Pessetti in the Guidance office to sign up by the deadline. Bring a check for $13.00 made payable to Elmwood Park High School. For more information, please see your counselor.
Students will receive their scores in the mail, and those who qualify for National Merit recognition (at any level) will be automatically submitted to ISAC (the Illinois Student Assistance Commission) which is the administrator in Illinois for all National Merit recognition.
NEW!!! Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive a free personalized PSAT/NMSQT college planning kit online at www.collegeboard.com/quickstart Using a unique access code that will be printed on the score report, students will be able to access scores, customized study plans, practice tests, personalized lists of majors and careers, personalized lists of colleges based on the student’s location and preferred major, and access to MyRoad, an interactive majors, college, and career exploration program.
EXPLORE: The EXPLORE test helps 9th grade students build high school course plans that will prepare them for college and work and introduces them to career options that are relevant to them. The results can show students areas where they need extra help or additional courses and give suggestions for improving their skills. The results can let students know if they are on track for college.
Registration: All 9th grade students are automatically registered to take the EXPLORE test and are required to take it in April. There is no registration fee. Students will receive their results in the mail sometime in October.
Test Date: TBA
PLAN: The PLAN Test is the "Pre-ACT" test. The test is designed to be taken by Sophomores in the Spring of their Sophomore year. The PLAN test is great practice for the Prairie State test, which is given in the Junior year to all students, and includes the ACT. In addition, the PLAN gives students additional input into their career plans in relation to their current academic achievement.
Test Date: TBA
Registration: All Sophomores will be automatically registered for the PLAN test and are required to take it in April. There is no registration fee. Students will receive their scores in the mail sometime in October.
Prairie State Exams: Elmwood Park High School is required to administer the Prairie State Exam in April, along with all other schools in Illinois. The results are used to measure the overall school progress toward the State's academic goals and standards. The first day of the test includes a full standard version of the ACT Test. Students can use ACT scores when applying to colleges and are encouraged to take the ACT more once. Colleges always accept a student's highest score. Taking ACT is a graduation requirement!
Test Dates: TBA
Registration: All Juniors will be automatically registered for the test and are required to take it. There is no registration fee. Students who are absent will be informed of a make-up date and are required to take the make-up.
AP Exams: Advanced Placement Exams are given in selected areas of study to give opportunity for students to demonstrate superior achievement in those subject areas. The tests are aligned with the curriculum and content of the AP classes which are offered as high school classes. Elmwood Park High School offers AP classes in some (but not all) subject areas for which an AP Test is available. Students can report their scores to any college they choose. Colleges determine, based on their own criteria, whether to issue college credit based on a student's score on a particular test. Students who are in AP classes are encouraged to confer with their teacher and their prospective college(s) as to the advisability of taking an AP Test.
Test Dates: Individual tests are administered during the first 2 weeks of May. Test dates are set by the College Board, and are NOT changeable. See your counselor for schedules or additional information.
Registration: Registration forms are provided to all students, and are available in the Counseling office in January. Registration forms must be turned in to the Counseling office in February (specific deadlines will be announced). There is a registration fee of $45.00 per test.
Testing Tips:
The Day Before
- Gather up everything you're going to need for the next morning. You don't want to be stuck frantically searching for your Admission Ticket just before you rush out the door. You'll need the following items:
-
- Acceptable photo ID
- Your SAT Admission Ticket
- Two sharpened No. 2 pencils (pens and mechanical pencils are not allowed)
- A calculator with fresh batteries
- A hand-held CD player with fresh batteries, if you are taking a Language Test with Listening
- Write down the directions to the test center. Make sure you know how to get to your test center and how long it'll take you to get there.
- Check to see if your test center is open. Especially if there is bad weather in your area, tune into your local media (like you do for school closing announcements) or visit www.collegeboard.com on the Friday before the test to make sure your test center is open.
- Be well-rested and ready to go. Get a good night's sleep the night before the test.
- Set two alarms-one in your room and one in someone else's room, in case you hit the snooze button one time too many.
The Morning of the Test
- Eat breakfast. You'll be at the test center for four hours and you're likely to get hungry.
- Bring snacks. During one of the breaks, you can eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you. A healthy snack will go a long way toward keeping you alert during the entire test.
- Arrive at your test center no later than 7:45 a.m. Don't risk getting locked out because you're 30 seconds late. Give yourself plenty of time to get to get there. Consider traffic, weather conditions, flat tires, and anything else that could slow you down.
- Leave your cell phone at home. Don't run the risk of having your phone ring or vibrate during testing. It could cost you your scores! If you are seen using a cell phone or any other prohibited electronic device while in the test center, or if the device makes noise or vibrates, you may be dismissed immediately, your scores may be canceled, and the device may be confiscated. This policy also applies to any other prohibited digital and/or electronic devices such as Blackberries, pagers, PDAs, cameras or other photographic equipment, or separate timers of any kind. We strongly advise you not to bring them.
During the Test
- Use breaks to eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you. You will have several breaks during the test. Use them to relax and eat a snack so you can stay focused.
- Work only on the section you are supposed to be working on. You're not allowed to go back to a section once that section has ended. You also can't start the next section if you finish a section early.
- Do easier questions first. You earn just as many points for easy questions as you do for hard ones.
- Make sure you use a No. 2 pencil on the answer sheet. It is very important that you fill in the entire circle darkly and completely. If you change your response, erase it as completely as possible. It is very important that you follow these instructions when filling out your answer sheet.
- Use all of your time. Students around you may close up their test books and rest their heads on their desks, but you know better. Go back to review problems you weren't quite sure about the first time. Or, if you skipped any hard problems use the time to try to work them out.
- Stay positive and focused. Keep your mind on your work, not your score.
- Try not to worry about whether you "nailed it" or "blew it." Know you did your best-and celebrate. You deserve it.

Athletic Training
What is Athletic Training?
Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) are medical experts in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. Athletic trainers can help you avoid unnecessary medical treatment and disruption of normal daily life; if you're injured, they can get you on the mend and keep you on the move.
Specifically, the ATC specializes in six practice areas or domains:
- Prevention

As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents. The ATC gets to know each athlete/patient individually and can treat injuries more effectively because of that.
An ATC's day may, for example, include these tasks:
- Prepare athletes for practice or competition, including taping, bandaging and bracing
- Evaluate injuries to determine their management and possible referral
- Develop conditioning programs
- Implement treatment and rehabilitation programs
These duties require extensive knowledge and strong decision-making skills obtained through the ATC's experience and education.

Tiger Football
2008 - 2009 Tiger Football
Dear Tiger Football Parents,
I hope that this letter finds you doing well. I am very excited to start the 2008-2009 football season as we approach our 1st day of practice Wednesday August 13, 2008. This letter is to inform you of the requirements to be eligible to participate in a sport at Elmwood Park High School. Please make sure that all of these requirements are met before August 13th. It is very important that all football players are eligible on the 1st day of practice due to the Illinois High School Association guidelines. Your son may be ineligible to play in the first game should he miss any practice. There are 3 things that the students must have in the athletic office prior the first day of practice and they are as follows:
- NEW PHYSICAL FORM COMPLETED
- $50 ATHLETIC FEE
- PERMISSION/CONSENT/INSURANCE FORM
ALL MUST BE TURNED INTO THE ATHLETIC OFFICE BEFORE THE 1st DAY OF PRACTICE
(Please contact Melanie Uvelli at 583-5468 with questions - all of these can be turned in to the Athletic Office 8-3 Monday-Friday.)
The Tiger Football Program emphasizes the importance of getting a good start academically for the school year and teaching our students the fundamentals of the game while making sure they are having fun. Elmwood Park High School football players are expected to be leaders in the classrooms and in the hallways. They are expected to be on time to school and practices EVERYDAY. The football athlete is a special student that helps set the tone to kick off the new school year. We will stress making good decisions on and off the field and being accountable for our actions. I am very excited for this season as I look forward to working with your sons and I hope to see you all very soon. Varsity and sophomores must report to school on August 12 for equipment issue and spirit packs at 4:00pm. Spirit packs will cost $25 and include 1 Tiger Football shirt and 1 pair of Tiger Football shorts. Freshmen can purchase the spirit packs on Wednesday August 13th. Attached are a calendar and a newsletter about the football program and upcoming events. Please note practice times and dates; especially the holiday weekends. GO TIGERS!
Sincerely,
Luis Arroyo
