Elmwood Elementary School students, staff and parents packed the school gym on Tuesday, Oct. 31, to watch the screening of a special video — a video that starred the Elmwood community itself.

The video, titled "All Kinds of Kinds 2017," was produced as part of District 401's "All Kinds of Kinds" project. Students and staff from John Mills Elementary School also took part in the project with their own multimedia contributions.

Two rows of photos depict Elmwood students and staff members holding up signs as part of the school's "All Kinds of Kinds" project.

What Is "All Kinds of Kinds"?

Inspired by North Park (N.Y.) Junior High School's project of the same name, "All Kinds of Kinds" supports the District's belief in the importance of Social and Emotional Learning and the value of celebrating diversity, respecting people's differences and promoting pride among our students.

The Elmwood and John Mills communities participated by completing an activity and lesson in which their students and staff determined what "Kind of Kind" they were. They prepared signs declaring their "kind," which they displayed in still photos. Each school also made a video illustrating the different kinds found within their communities.

The videos featured Miranda Lambert's "All Kinds of Kind" song as the soundtrack. D401 Instructional Technology Coordinator Ms. Jessica Iovinelli worked with both schools to produce the videos and take the photos.

Each school's photos were then put on display at their respective buildings. According to Ms. Iovinelli, the photos allow "staff, students and visitors to see the diversity in the buildings, appreciate the uniqueness of others, find people that may be similar to their own kind and learn a little bit about each person in the schools."

Schoolwide assemblies capped off the project with video screenings at each school —John Mills on Oct. 27 and Elmwood on Oct. 31.
