Letter to the Community from Dr. Wade

NOTE: District 401 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicolas Wade sent the following letter to the D401 community on Thursday, July 27. To download a PDF copy of Dr. Wade's letter, click here.

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians, Community Members and District Employees,

It goes without saying that our state has gone through some significant uncertainty the past couple of years and it is difficult to acknowledge how it is becoming the norm. The most recent back and forth amongst politicians is coming at the expense of our community, but, more specifically and importantly, our students. As I write this I am seeing a growing number of stories across Illinois about how school districts are unsure how long their doors can be open to students, let alone whether they can be open on the first day of school.

And this is where I would like to be clear to everyone reading this letter. The first day of school for Elmwood Park students is Wednesday, August 16, as it was intended and scheduled.

Due to our Board of Education's fiscal management, our district is fortunate to be able to have our doors open. While I am optimistic that a resolution at the state level can happen, I wanted to convey to all stakeholders that Elmwood Park CUSD #401 will begin the school year as scheduled. It is my sincere hope that the state's difficulty in funding schools passes, the resolution does not have additional financial implications onto school districts, and, ultimately, the end result allows us to maintain and continue our success and growth.

This decision does not come lightly, but if you have questions, comments, or concerns, I am available to hear them out at waden@epcusd401.org and 708-583-5831. In addition to sharing with me, I recommend you share them with your local representatives and state leadership. (See information below.)

Sincerely,

Dr. Nicolas D. Wade, Superintendent
