State Rep. Camille Y. Lilly (D-78th District) spent several hours recently with some of her younger constituents as she visited classes and spoke with students at Elm Middle School on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The visit came in response to an invitation from Principal Dr. Kathleen Porreca, who invited Rep. Lilly to be "Principal for the Day."

The legislator, who has represented Elmwood Park in the Illinois House since 2010, visited social studies classes taught by Mr. Sam Cannici (7th grade), Mr. Christian Hartwig (8th) and Ms. Susan Hawes (8th). Rep. Lilly also had lunch with several Elm faculty members and with Dr. Porreca, Assistant Principal Ms. Rebecca Siegel and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicolas Wade.

So what did Rep. Lilly think of Elm's students, who kept her on her toes for almost two hours with questions about her life experiences and her work as an elected official?

"The students are awesome," she said. "They had great, thought-provoking questions. They were engaged, they were listening — and we don't get that in Springfield sometimes. So I was excited. The school is awesome, and the teachers' commitment to their students is evident. I feel I'm in heaven at the moment."
