The John Mills PTA's first Scholastic Book Fair of the new school year will take place from Monday, Sept. 25, to Friday, Sept. 29.

With a theme of "Wild West — Saddle Up and Read!," the fair will be located in an enclosed area on the John Mills stage and will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Support Reading — and Our School

During the weeklong event, the stage area will take on the look and feel of a Wild West-themed bookstore. Mobile cases will be filled with affordable volumes featuring characters and subjects elementary-age children enjoy and want to read about.

If you've never been to a book fair, it's a great opportunity to buy books for your children while supporting John Mills at the same time.

"Our Scholastic Book Fairs promote reading through a schoolwide celebration that brings everyone together," said PTA treasurer Christine Krahulik. "We decorate the halls and have activities that go along with each book fair."

Partnership with Scholastic

The PTA organizes John Mills' book fairs in conjunction with Scholastic, the educational publishing company. This year's PTA book fair chairperson is Athina Martinico.

"Scholastic is very involved," Ms. Krahulik said. "The chairperson and PTA volunteers do all the planning, decorating and activities around the event, but Scholastic basically drops the 'fair' off — bookcases along with boxes and boxes of books, as well as trinkets."

The company also provides a "toolkit" for the chairperson to use. Additional support comes via a Scholastic-supplied consultant who can be contacted with questions.

The First of Three Fairs in 2017-18

Logo for Wild West book fairThe PTA will have two more book fairs this school year after the Sept 25-29 event: another themed fair in February and a "Buy One, Get One Half Off" fair in May, just in time to stock up on summer reading.

"We are very proud to be one of a very small number of schools in the Chicagoland area to have three book fairs per year," Ms. Krahulik said. "Additionally, we have one of the largest fairs in the area."

When Ms. Krahulik talks about book fairs, she speaks from her experience not just as a parent but as a former Mills student herself.

"I graduated from John Mills in 1990, and we had them too," she recalled. "They were much smaller and not such huge events, but we had them."

So be sure to come out to the Sept. 25-29 fair and participate in what's become a great John Mills PTA tradition. In the meantime, if you need some motivation, check out these photos of Ms. Traci Dean's 3rd graders and Ms. Elizabeth Murray's 5th graders demonstrating their own love of reading. See you at the fair!
