Art
Below are descriptions of the art courses offered at Elm Middle School.
Art 6
Grade level: 6
In Art 6, students are invited to look inward. To drive the art-making content, students will engage in introspective activities to explore their personal narrative, their stories, their autobiographies, their histories and their internal dialogue. They will consider how their identity is shaped and influenced by their experiences and which stories they choose to collect and embrace and which stories they prefer to discard.
Art 7
Grade Level: 7
Art 7 invites students to look nearby and around. Through art making, students will contemplate and explore how their identity, their sense of self, is rooted within relationships and is influenced by how they present themselves and by how they believe others see them. They will draw inspiration from connections to immediate and local groups, such as families, peers and the community. They will sift — or prospect — for connections that resonate, that provide a sense of belonging, and that they want to foster and incorporate into their identity as they simultaneously individuate and connect.
Art 8
Grade Level: 8
Students are invited to look outward and forward in Art 8. Through art making, students will consider the potential course of their life and recognize that life is bound by mortality. They will contemplate a future self and engage in imagined retrospection. Through their art-making, students will find ways to connect with the world around them so that they can experience a sense of purpose and become aware of their personal potential.
