Summer Learning Academy | Grades K-8


Each year District 401 offers summer classes for students who want opportunities to continue their learning. Our 2020 Summer Academy for grades K-8 will be offered from June 2 to July 2 at Elmwood Park High School.

Five-week courses cost $175, and two-week courses cost $75. All students will receive a free breakfast and lunch, courtesy of the Seamless Summer Grant. 

PLEASE NOTE: Students recommended for Academic Courses were notified Thursday, Feb. 20. Registration for Interest-Based Courses began at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24.

Fast Facts About the 2020 Program


Two main course tracks will be available for students this summer: 

► ACADEMIC COURSES 
These courses are open to District 401 students who meet specific academic criteria. The classes last two weeks (10 days) or five weeks (23 days).

► INTEREST-BASED COURSES
These courses, which make up "Exploration Academy," are open to all students who will be in grades K-8 for the 2020-21 school year. The classes last two weeks or five weeks. 

Both course tracks are described in greater detail in separate sections below ("Academic Courses" and "Interest-Based Courses").

► COST
Two-week courses cost $75. Five-week courses cost $175.

► COMMON FEATURES
All summer courses, whether academic or interest-based, share the following features:

  • The school day runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
  • The school day includes daily breakfast and teacher-supervised lunch.
  • Breakfast and lunch are free, courtesy of the Seamless Summer Grant.
  • All courses will be finished before the Fourth of July.

The principal of the K-8 Summer Learning Academy is Ms. Morgan Freeck, the District's instructional specialist for math and science. 


Academic Courses


District 401 students are recommended for these courses based on predetermined criteria and teacher recommendation.

Students who are recommended for these classes will be notified on Thursday, Feb. 20.

KINDERGARTEN COUNTDOWN CAMP
This is a two-week class for incoming kindergarten students. Eligibility is based on kindergarten readiness data.

EL NEWCOMERS CAMP
This is a two-week class for incoming students in grades 1-8 who are new to the United States. Eligibility is based on English Learners criteria.

EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR (ESY)
ESY consists of five-week courses for students who qualify based on special education services.

SCHOLASTIC ACADEMY
Scholastic Academy consists of five-week courses for incoming students in grades 1-5. Coursework will utilize the school-year curriculum (e.g., GO Math!, ReadyGEN, STEMscopes, myWorld Interactive) to meet specific learning needs. Students will qualify based on specific academic criteria. Depending on need, some classes will have a co-teacher.


Interest-Based Courses


All students are invited to sign up for an interest-based course based on their grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8). These courses, which make up the summer program's Exploration Academy, do not require students to meet specific criteria, but space is limited.

Registration for interest-based courses begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24. Students will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis.

COURSES FOR GRADES K-2

  • Science Seekers, two weeks (June 8-19)
  • Writer's Workshop, two weeks (June 8-19)

COURSES FOR GRADES 3-5

  • STEM Camp, five weeks (June 2-July 2)
  • Limitless Minds, five weeks (June 2-July 2)

COURSES FOR GRADES 6-8

  • Stained Glass Class, two weeks (June 8-19)
  • Limitless Minds, two weeks (June 8-19 )
