Our School

NOTE ABOUT ECC: The Early Childhood Center will close permanently on June 30, 2020. Beginning with the 2020-21 school year, pre-kindergarten students will attend John Mills School. Kindergarten students will attend either Mills or Elmwood School.

The Early Childhood Center serves 229 students in preschool and kindergarten. All of our students must be residents of Elmwood Park, Ill., located in the Near West suburbs of Chicago.

We have 28 faculty and staff members. Our average class size is 18 students.

Our Preschool Program

The ECC's preschool program provides a half-day of instruction and growth activities five days a week to 3- and 4-year-old students.

Our preschool program focuses on enhancing the total growth of the child by fostering independence, encouraging social skills and developing a curiosity for learning.

We offer an active, inclusive environment using an evidence-based curriculum and highly qualified teachers. Students are introduced to the early concepts of reading and math through the promotion of social interactions with peers and teachers.

Class size is limited to 18 students, one teacher and one aide.

Our Kindergarten Program

The ECC's kindergarten program provides instruction five days a week to children who are 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Most classes are half a day; one is full day.

Our kindergarten program is based on the Illinois Early Learning Standards, which include language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.

We offer a nurturing environment that is rich in hands-on experiences in reading, math, literature, music, physical education, social studies and science. We stress both academics and social skills.

Additional support services such as speech, English as a new language and reading support are available for students who qualify. A self-contained section of bilingual kindergarten is also offered. Parents are encouraged to participate in school activities.
