ACCESS Testing

Illinois requires that all students in kindergarten through 12th grade who have been identified as English Learners take the state’s English language proficiency test each year, usually in January.

This test is known as ACCESS for ELLs, which stands for "Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners."

The ACCESS test measures student proficiency in the four domains of English language development: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Students are required to take the ACCESS test annually, regardless of level of service, until they meet the Illinois state-mandated criteria of an overall composite score of 4.8.

2019-20 Testing Window

The ACCESS testing window for Illinois EL students during the 2019-20 school year will be Jan. 15 through Feb. 18, 2020.

As mentioned above, the test will be used to measure student growth in English proficiency in the content areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
