Students are required to take language arts throughout their two years at Elm Middle School. Each language arts class meets daily.
Elm teachers engage students in a variety of literature, both fiction and nonfiction. Students read, dissect and discuss full-length books, poetry, informational nonfiction essays and other forms of writing.
Instruction at each grade level includes rigorous practice in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students learn to analyze literary and nonliterary written material, to cite evidence from the source text and to write in a variety of forms, including the research paper.
Because District 401 is committed to offering an articulated curriculum that is consistent across grade levels and content areas, teachers and students in grades 6-12 use MyPerspectives as their English language arts curriculum.
This builds upon the foundational work done in grades K-5, when ReadyGEN was used as the curricular program at the Early Childhood Center and at both of the District's elementary schools, Elmwood and John Mills.
