Led by two runners in the top 10, the Elm Middle School boys cross country team placed second at the 2019 Leyden-Norwood Athletic Conference (LNAC) Meet Oct. 8 at Grant Park in Northlake.

Seventh graders Nate Brown and Ethan Rivera each took home a medal after finishing individually in 5th and 6th place respectively.

Nate ran the mile-and-a-half course in 9 minutes, 38 seconds. Ethan was right behind him at 9:39.

Although no 8th graders from the Elm team broke into the top 10, their influence was felt in other ways, according to Head Coach Meg Walsh.

“At the first practice I challenged the 8th-grade runners to take a leadership role,” said Coach Walsh. “They accepted the challenge both during practice and in competition. They stepped up, both motivating and challenging each other and the 7th-grade squad to work harder.”

The Cougars competed in the conference meet against eight other schools: Giles, Hester, Lincoln, Mannheim, Pennoyer, Rhodes, Rosemont and Union Ridge.

The only school placing ahead of Elm was team champion Mannheim.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which the Cougars have finished among the top three squads at the LNAC meet. Besides this year’s runner-up finish, the Cougars placed third in 2018, second in 2017 and first in 2016.

“I was happy with the number of students that came out for the team,” said Coach Walsh, who will be adding even more runners to the team next year when Elm expands to include 6th grade.

“We are all really looking forward to growing the program,” she added. “It will make us stronger at all levels of cross country throughout the District.”
