On Jan. 24, 2013, then-Governor Quinn signed into effect Public Act 097-1147, also known as Erin’s Law. This law requires child sexual abuse prevention education for children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grades. District 401 will be implementing these lessons during the 2020-21 school year. School social workers will be presenting on Erin’s Law to your student(s) in their classrooms.
The Student Services administration and the District social workers worked together to develop age-appropriate presentations for our students. Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade lessons will focus on personal body safety and include information about safe and unsafe touches, safe and unsafe secrets, as well as identifying trusted adults. Middle school lessons will focus on personal body safety, making healthy choices, sexual harassment, interpersonal relationships and identifying trusted adults. Lessons will start the week of Oct. 19.
The District realizes this is a sensitive topic; therefore, please contact your building principal in writing by 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, if you do not want your student to participate in these lessons.
In order to learn more about the content of these lessons, please join us for a virtual information session for parents and guardians from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. We will review what will be presented in the classrooms and how this information will be shared and discussed for the various ages and grade levels.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your student's building administrator.
Ms. Ashley Groeneveld
