1990 EPHS alumnus Sam LaBarbera (center) was MVP on two Tiger golf teams, and he passed along his love of the sport to his sons, Joe (left) and Sammy. This past fall the younger LaBarberas led EPHS to its first conference golf title since 1991, the year after their father graduated. (Image from "WE ARE 401" video by Dave Porreca)

In our latest "WE ARE 401" video we meet Sam LaBarbera, EPHS Class of 1990, and his sons, Joe, an EPHS senior, and Sammy, a freshman.

As MVP of the Tiger golf team in 1989 and 1990, Mr. LaBarbera helped put the varsity golf program on the road to winning a conference title, a goal the Tigers achieved a year after he graduated.

That was the last time EPHS golf won a title, until Mr. LaBarbera's sons helped lead the Tigers to a championship earlier this fall.

The story of the LaBarberas and their pursuit of golfing excellence is a story of the bonds between father and sons — and a story of how a sport and a school can unite different generations over time. Go Tigers!

"WE ARE 401" is a video series highlighting those who have a connection with Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401, past or present, and whose stories help illustrate who we are.
