Reading Team for 2020-21

District 401 provides reading specialists at Elmwood Elementary School and John Mills Elementary School to improve reading achievement among students who need extra help.

The District's reading specialists are authorized to teach reading, oversee direct supplemental instructional programs and services, and provide support to general education staff for Tier 1-level classroom interventions.

Each of our elementary schools has two reading specialists. We are delighted to introduce them to you in the sections below.

John Mill Elementary School | Karen Belluomini

Ms. Karen Belluomini spent 2019-20 as the reading specialist at the Early Childhood Center. 

With the ECC now permanently closed, Ms. Belluomini returns to John Mills Elementary School, where she spent 16 years as a classroom teacher before moving to the ECC. During her previous stint at John Mills, Ms. Belluomini taught 1st and 2nd grades.

Prior to working in Elmwood Park, Ms. Belluomini taught 1st grade for five years in Waukegan. Before that, she taught preschool for two years in Highland Park and 3rd grade for one year in Lake Forest.

Ms. Belluomini has a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from National Louis University as well as a master's degree in reading education from Concordia University.

Each day Ms. Belluomini hopes to share her love and excitement for learning with her students.

John Mills Elementary School | Tracey Laskowski

Ms. Tracey Laskowski has taught in District 401 for 21 years.

She began as a classroom teacher at John Mills, where she taught 2nd and 3rd grades over the course of a decade.

Moving to Elmwood, Ms. Laskowski served there as a reading specialist for eight years. She continued working as a reading specialist when she moved back to John Mills three years ago.

Ms. Laskowski has a master's degree in curriculum & instruction from National Louis University as well as a master's degree in reading education from Concordia University.

Every day she hopes to be the best teacher she can for her students, and she always wants her students to be the best students that they can be!

Elmwood Elementary School | Naomi DiSilvio

Although Ms. Naomi DiSilvio is entering her first year as a reading specialist at Elmwood Elementary School, she is no stranger to the home of the Panthers. She comes to her new position after teaching 3rd grade at Elmwood.

Elmwood Elementary School | Domenica Maione

Ms. Domenica Maione is the reading specialist at Elmwood Elementary School. Ms. Maione has been a reading specialist at Elmwood for the past 16 years.

Before joining the Elmwood staff, she worked for six years in Maywood School District 89, where she taught kindergarten as well as 1st and 2nd grade.  

Trained in multiple interventions to support student learning and growth, Ms. Maione has a master's degree in reading education from Concordia University and a master's in school leadership & administration from Dominican University.

Ms. Maione's goal is to be a positive role model and instill a love of reading in her students!
