What Makes PBIS Different
A PBIS school is proactive. Instead of waiting for misconduct to happen and then responding, a PBIS school teaches behavioral expectations and rewards students for following those expectations.
Support systems that teach and reinforce positive behavior are essential for this approach to succeed. PBIS schools create and sustain three levels of support for their students:
- Primary level — schoolwide support for all students
- Secondary level — group support for students with at-risk behavior
- Tertiary level — individual support for high-risk students
Together these systems define, teach and encourage student behaviors necessary for creating positive school environments.
In a PBIS school, targeted misbehavior becomes less effective, and desired behavior becomes a firmly rooted part of the school’s culture.
A Record of Success
The PBIS model has been successfully implemented in more than 21,000 schools around the country, resulting in dramatic reductions in disciplinary interventions and increases in academic achievement.
As the San Jose (Calif.) Unified School District has noted in explaining its own use of PBIS: "Teaching behavioral expectations and rewarding students for following them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehavior to occur before responding. The purpose of schoolwide PBIS is to establish a climate in which appropriate behavior is the norm."
