Curriculum & Standards
District 401's two elementary schools — John Mills Elementary and Elmwood Elementary — provide rigorous, standards-based instruction in a variety of academic subjects.
Our core curriculum is made up of instruction in the following areas:
- English Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
- Social Studies
Our students also receive instruction in the following subjects, which we call "specials":
- Art
- Enrichment
- Music
- Physical Education
- Technology
The District's curriculum is fully aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards (ILS), which in turn incorporate standards from a variety of other sources, such as the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
In addition, the District has aligned its use of technology to the globally recognized standards developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
Taken together, these standards establish the goals and expectations for instruction at all of the District's grade levels.
