Promotion Policy

In keeping with District 401’s focus on the promotion of students rather than retention, John Mills parents will be informed about promotion criteria at the start of each school year.

Our goal is to establish and maintain clear communication with parents, students and staff. If interventions are necessary, parents will be an integral part of any action plan.

Examining Student Performance

As part of this policy, student performance will be examined in numerous ways depending upon the student's grade level, including report card grades and state testing.

Multiple sources of information will be included in each grade level's promotion criteria procedures. Consideration will be given to developmental needs in the early years and to special needs children such as English Language Learners and special education.

Other considerations may be reviewed before retention is recommended to the principal. Other data may be reviewed and considered for transfer students.

District 401’s Policy on Promotion

John Mills’ procedures and practices in this area are governed by District 401’s policy on grading and promotion, which can be found in Section 6:280 of the Board of Education’s Policy Manual. The policy includes the following directives:

The decision to promote a student to the next grade level shall be based on successful completion of the curriculum, attendance, and performance on the Illinois Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and/or other assessments. A student shall not be promoted based upon age or any other social reason not related to academic performance. The administration shall determine remedial assistance for a student who is not promoted.
