The first day of school at John Mills Elementary School on Wednesday, Aug. 15, was busy for students and parents both! After waiting outside for the doors to open, students followed their teachers inside the building to begin the school year. Meanwhile, their parents went to the gym for Curriculum Morning, where they received an overview of 2018-19 from Principal Ms. Laura Magruder and Assistant Principal Ms. Jamie Ponce. Students and parents then switched places, as parents visited their children's classrooms and students entered the gym for Omegaman … And Friends, a superhero-themed assembly about bullying prevention and respectful behavior. The character of Guardian Andy presented the uplifting message while entertaining students with feats of strength, including snapping a baseball bat over his leg and lifting two students over his head on a makeshift barbell.
"We were happy to see so many smiling faces," Ms. Magruder said. "Students were excited to come back to school and settled right into their new classrooms. Also, we want to thank all of the parents who came out for our Curriculum Morning. It was a great opportunity for parents to meet the teachers and the administrators. Also, parents were able to learn about all of the great things going on at John Mills, including our new ELA and math curricula."
