The contest, which took place at Elmwood before a large audience in the school gym, featured 22 of the best spellers from the District's two elementary schools.
The contestants came from grades 4-6 at Elmwood and John Mills Elementary School. They were selected as the top 11 spellers at their respective schools based on qualifying tests.
Kate clinched the title in the 16th round when she correctly spelled "smuggler." Mel Rubio, an Elmwood 5th grader, finished as runner-up, and Elmwood 6th grader Anthony Huaman placed third. The top John Mills spellers were 6th grader Hania Xhafa and 5th grader Nicole Gorka.
