Letter from Dr. Wade: Putting the 2016-17 State Report Cards in Context

NOTE: District 401 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicolas Wade has written the following letter to the D401 community concerning the newly released 2016-17 Illinois Report Cards. To download a PDF copy of Dr. Wade's letter, click here.

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, Community Members and District Employees,

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has released the district and school report cards for public viewing. The report card itself provides a metric-driven review of how a district, as a whole, or an individual building is performing on state-mandated assessments, in addition to providing general information concerning demographics, enrollment, expenditures and so on. These report cards provide important information that is digestible for the reader and can be part of what is utilized for the District Office to develop a vision to improve upon the learning environment for students and staff.

The report card itself has been modified, and will continue to be, by ISBE, especially concerning score reporting on standardized assessments to determine grade-level and/or post-secondary readiness. This does not make the data less meaningful as ISBE continues to analyze and report on the data, but it does provide some difficulty in monitoring students and/or building performance year to year as those cut scores are adjusted or the assessments change.

While viewing the report cards can lead to noticing real and perceived strengths and weaknesses for each building and Elmwood Park CUSD 401 as a whole, please know that this information is included in the District's vision to further enhance the learning environment for students and staff by providing the necessary resources to articulate curriculum and expectations, in addition to student support services.

If you have any questions and/or concerns you can reach me at 708-583-5831 and/or waden@epcusd401.org.
