Students at Elmwood Elementary and John Mills Elementary saw for themselves just how quickly a fire can spread when members of the Elmwood Park Fire Department conducted burn box demonstrations outside their schools as part of Fire Prevention Week 2021.

The demonstrations took place on Tuesday, Oct. 5, and Thursday, Oct. 7, when EPFD members visited Elmwood and John Mills respectively to give lessons on fire safety.

The firefighters presented grade-level assemblies and then capped off their visits with the burn box demos.

The theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week is "Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety," and in keeping with that EPFD members focused on the importance of smoke alarms.

The firefighters stressed that knowing what to do when an alarm sounds is crucial to keeping family members safe. When a smoke alarm goes off, they told the students, action must be taken immediately. A continued set of three loud beeps — beep, beep, beep — means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1 and stay out.

On the other hand, a single “chirp” every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed. All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years.

In the afternoon, when all students went outside to watch the burn box demonstration at their respective schools, EPFD members started a small fire within a metal storage container filled with furniture and other ordinary household items.

Within a few minutes, the container was filled with orange flames and black smoke. The firefighters just as quickly extinguished the blaze, but the lesson was clear to everyone: In a genuine fire emergency, there's no time to wonder what to do, so having a plan is essential.

As a sidenote, for two firefighters the visit to Elmwood was more than just business; they each have children who attend the school.

Mr. Corey Leber, who narrated the Elmwood demonstration, is father of Abby Leber, and Mr. Frank Casella is father of Joey and Fiona Casella. Scroll down this page to see photos of Mr. Leber and Mr. Casella with their children.

Thank you, EPFD, for visiting our schools and sharing the lessons of Fire Prevention Week!
