EPHS junior Rose Craig qualified for the IHSA state finals in girl wrestling when she placed fourth out of 17 wrestlers in the 130-pound weight class in Saturday's 2A sectional at Evanston Township High School.
This is the second year that the IHSA has offered a postseason tournament in girls wrestling, and Craig is the first EPHS female wrestler to advance to the state level.
The top four finishers in each weight class at sectionals automatically advance to state. Craig made it into the top four of her weight class by defeating Madelyn Sears of Oak Forest and Khloe Heerdegen of Mundelein.
Despite losing to eventual champion Attalia Watson-Castro of Homewood-Flossmoor and dropping the third-place match to Amaria Ridgner of Rich Township, Craig's season record now stands at 16-5.
The girls state meet will be held Feb. 24-25 at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Also competing in wrestling sectionals for EPHS over the weekend were senior Martin Lozano, sophomore Jack Dombek and freshman Geo Casas, who wrestled in the boys Class 2A sectional at Deerfield High School.
Although none of the Tiger boys qualified for state, each member of the trio had plenty to be proud of.
Whereas the girls tournament didn't include regional meets, the boys tournament started with regionals, from which only the top three wrestlers in each weight class advanced to sectionals.
At the Feb. 4 Class 2A regional meet at Ridgewood High School, Lozano won the 285-pound title, Dombek finished as the 120-pound runner-up, and Casas took third in the 106-pound class.
Congratulations to all of the Tiger wrestlers who competed in the IHSA postseason, and good luck to Rose Craig as she prepares for state! Go Tigers!
