Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Chicago (Bridgeport). I graduated high school from Jones College Prep, I received my undergrad from Benedictine University, a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and ESL from Concordia University.

How long have you been in education?
I have been in education for 14 years and this is my first year in administration.

What do you most enjoy about working with kids?
I love how kids have an endless sense of wonder and curiosity. Their imagination is incredible and they often see the world uniquely. It’s inspiring to witness their creativity and enthusiasm, and I enjoy the genuine joy they bring to learning and exploring new ideas. Plus, their honesty and spontaneity at the elementary level keep things interesting and fun!

What made you want to get into education?
My love for education started in 3rd grade because of my teacher, Mrs. Piegari. She was a beautiful example of how powerful it is to make a positive impact on the lives of children. Helping others discover their potential, nurturing their curiosity, and fostering a love for learning is incredibly fulfilling. Education shapes our future, and being part of that journey for kids, guiding and inspiring others is truly rewarding. As an educator, each day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth, which keeps things dynamic and exciting! I decided to go into special education because of an incredible experience I had in high school, as well as two very special boys in my life; Michael Smith and Christian Shaw.

What's something most people don't know about you?
I have two amazing boys, Mason (6) and Jackson (4), and a beautiful foster daughter Gracelyn (1).

What do you most enjoy about Elmwood Park?
I love our deep-rooted community! Relationships are very important to me, and everywhere you go it feels like home! I love coming to work every day and being a part of such a hard-working group of individuals. What I love most is the people I get to work with and the opportunity to be a positive role model for our students!

EPCUSD 401 is incredibly grateful to have Collins and excited about her journey!
